Martin Luther King Historic Site

Our family has visited many historic sites that have influenced our lives. We have been to Andrew Johnson’s home place, Davy Crockett’s birthplace, toured President Lincoln’s Homeplace and tomb and visited President Jimmy Carter’s Presidential Library. On our recent visit to Atlanta, we took the time to visit the Martin Luther King Jr Historic Site.

I grew up with parents who have always treated everyone as equals. It never mattered to my family what your skin color, ethnic origin or language you speak – everyone was treated as a new potential friend. Visiting the Martin Luther King Jr Historic Site was important for all of us.

When it comes time for my kids to learn about Martin Luther King Jr in the classroom, discuss the famous “I Have A dream” speech, or talk about the Civil Rights Movement, they will be able to say they have been there! Visiting museums and historic sites like this give my kids a better understanding about history and the events that shaped our country.

A young boy grows up in a time of segregation…A dreamer is moved by destiny into leadership of the modern civil rights movement…This was Martin Luther King, Jr. Come hear his story, visit the home of his birth, and where he played as a child. Walk in his footsteps, and hear his voice in the church where he moved hearts and minds. Marvel at how he was an instrument for social change.

Ebeneezer Baptist Church Now and Then

One of the highlights of visiting the Martin Luther King Jr Historic Site was walking inside Ebeneezer Baptist Church. I have been inside thousands of church auditoriums in my life. But walking in this auditorium was just a little different. There was such a sense of history. I thought it was interesting to find pictures from the 60′s and then compare them to the pictures we took on our recent visit.

The Memorial

Martin Luther King Jr and his wife have their memorial here at the Historic Site. It started raining while we were there but there is a covered archway that goes the entire length of the reflecting pool.

King’s gravesite occupies most of the cleared lot east of the Ebenezer Baptist Church to Boulevard Street. In 1976 a memorial park was installed around the marble crypt. The park consists primarily of a brick and concrete plaza with arch-covered walkway and chapel partially surrounding a reflecting pool. In the center of the pool, on a raised pedestal rests the King crypt. On it is engraved the inscription: “Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1929-1968, ‘Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, I’m free at last.”

Things to Know

If you want to tour the Birth home, you must get your FREE tickets early! By the time we got there around noon, the tours were all full.
You can pick up a map at the Visitors Center of the various historic sites.
Take a free walking tour of the Historic Site so you can visit the shotgun houses, birth home, firehouse, Memorial Graves, Eternal Flame and Ebeneezer Baptist Church.
There are parking areas available around the Historic Site. We paid $5.00 to park in a lot near the church.
You do not need a ticket to visit the museum, fire house, church and memorial park.
There are interpretive events and speeches planned throughout the day. They are announced at different times. These are free as well.

How to Create Life-changing Core Values in Your 20′s

Imagine yourself in the following situations:

My best friend’s girlfriend invites me to her graduation party. I get inside information that there will be lots of drugs and excessive drinking during the party. Should I still attend the party? I know my best friend will be very disappointed if I miss this special day.

Tomorrow is my final exam, and I’m completely unprepared. The grade of this exam will either break or make my opportunity to graduate as an Honors student. My friend suggests creating a “cheat sheet” to use during the exam. Do I engage in this behavior?

I compete in tennis tournament with an opponent I know whose skills are sub-par. Do I play with a mindset that I’m playing with my younger sister who doesn’t know how to play or do I take every game seriously?

What values have been shared by my parents and family?

What cultural values have shaped my beliefs and worldview?

If you woke tomorrow morning and discovered you inherited $20 million, and had discovered you also had terminal disease with 10 years to live, what would be on your stop-doing list?

What will be written on my tombstone?

What legacy do I want to leave?

These are several of the many similar ethical dilemmas I’ve faced in my 20’s. It seems rather easy to make the “right choice” by reading these examples. But we all know that it’s a lot harder when you are actually in these situations. Suddenly, things have become a lot more blurry. In these very moments, you are tested on what you stand for.

A looming epidemic that is sweeping twenty-somethings today is what I call the “CV Syndrome.”

The CV (Core Value) Syndrome is a serious lack of awareness on his/her core values that results in an inconsistent and inadequate life. The implications of not curing this disease is debilitating, resulting in a life rife with regrets and guilt.

Here are several pointers to help you create core values that will set the foundation to greater fulfillment in life:

1. Reflect Life with a Helicopter View.

Don’t buy into the myth there will be plenty of time before you encounter the hard stop in life. Rather, start viewing life with a 30,000 ft big picture view, and find clues to how God is weaving your life story today. Here are some questions for you to consider:

Write down these answers and see if there are any common threads that emerge from this process. Ask these questions to your family and best friends. They will enlighten you with fresh and objective feedback. Circle the top words that reflect your core values below.

2. Core values should be VERBS, not Nouns.

Your core values are action statements, or verbs, not nouns. It is the difference between “honesty” (noun) and “Strive to always tell the truth.” (verb). Or, instead of “innovation” you might use “look at the problem from a different angle.” This makes sense because as “honesty” or “innovation” can be a nebulous concept which leaves plenty of room for different interpretations. So, thank about which one compels you to act this way?

3. Make your core values punchy. Punchy is memorable.

Punchy shows your uniqueness. This area a work in progress for me. Here’s an example of a punchy core value. Restaurants almost always have “customer service” as a core value. And they usually simply state those words as their core value. Cactus Club, a BC based restaurant chain, has a core value “the house of yes”. Which restaurant probably has a cooler culture? Which restaurant probably has better customer service? In fact, Cactus Club wins on both accounts (i.e., they are consistently voted one of the best companies to work for in BC)

4. Stay away from having too many core values.

Tony Hsieh, the founder and CEO of Zappos, a Great Place to Work company has built his company around their core values. He outlines 10 core values, but I would argue that while ten is a good number, people only remember 4, maybe 5. Choose the top five core values and think about how you can weave these values in the fabric of your life.

Here’s my top 5 core values:

Your core values cannot and should not stand alone. It needs to be aligned and integrated with your personal mission and vision statement. Read my post on “How to Develop a Mission Statement.”

Brilliant Nail Polish Removal Technique

Nail polishes are terrific when you don't need to remove them. It used to take me up to 30 minutes swiping the nail polish off using millions of cotton buds. It was both a waste of time and precious cotton buds that are needed for other great things like making sure my ears are squeaky clean. Too much info?

One bright and sunny day, I was browsing through my favorite nail blog (because I have no life), I came across a Youtube clip of Deborah Lippmann showing her quick and easy way of removing nail polish. That lady is a genius. I tried it at once and it worked so well. I've been using this method for a couple of months now and it has been unbeatable! Except with large chunky glitter like China Glaze Doll's House but maybe it was my fault since I applied 5 coats of the stuff. I've been introducing this amazing method to my friends and they all love it (the ones who tried). So here's a tutorial if you don't yet use this method.

Step one. Gather your equipment. You'd obviously need nail polish remover, I like mine acetone-free. It is purely psychological because as long as you're not consuming acetone, it won't do much harm. You nail polish is actually killing you more than your remover. Now that you've gotten your remover, get some cotton balls. They have to be BALLS. Not buds, not tissues, BALLS. Go out and buy a packet if you don't have any. They are so cheap and will last you forever. I only need 1 ball to remove both of my hands.

Now grab your ball. They're so fluffy. Unravel it into a strip.

It should come apart easily as the ball itself is produced by ravelling a strip like a snail shell.

Split your strip down the middle vertically into 2 strips. I am saving you money!

You can continue to split but I like mine with a little bulk. So now tear them into little pieces that are nail-sized. No need to be neat since this is all going to go into the rubbish bin anyway.

Keep tearing until you have a lot. I usually have 12-15 pieces. 10 for my nails and the others for wiping and cleaning up any bits of nail polish left behind.

Now you have the cotton pieces ready. Get your nail polish remover and pour it into the lid and fill it up like so.

Nice and smelly. Now take one of those cotton pieces (let's call it CP) and dip it into the remover. Don't dunk it in. Just dip in the edge because the remover will travel up the CP. Too much remover on the CP will dribble like crazy when you're pressing the CP onto your nail. It could travel up your hand all the way to your elbow. Happened to me before. Not a pleasant experience.

Press the wet CP onto your nail gently. It should be completely wet and cover your entire nail.

Do the same for all the other fingers. I like to do mine one hand at a time because I need the other hand to wipe the CP off.

Leave them on your nails for 1-2 minutes, give or take. That's the time where the remover is doing its job. This is similar to soaking your nails in remover but a lot less harsh on your skin. You nails will not absorb the remover. Like I said before, your nail polish would've killed your nails more than the remover. Next, grab a new piece of CP and wipe off the wet CP from your nail while pressing down with some force. Put some muscle into it! Do it from your nail bed to your nail tip. This way, your nails will not be damaged.

If you do it correctly, almost everything (if not everything) should come right off your nails.

I only have some polishes remaining on the sides because my thumb is flat, not curved like my nails, so I couldn't apply enough force to wipe the sides. Now repeat this for all the other nails.

This is with only one swipe. My index finger, middle finger and pinky are completely clean in just one swipe! This would've taken forever with cotton buds. Use your remaining CP to do the other hand and clean up any bits that maybe be left on your nails.

In the end, you'd have beautifully clean nails.

I even have a strip of CP left over. So that means I've used less than 1 cotton ball to remove all my nails.

I did time myself and found that I've completed the whole process in under 5 minutes, including the soaking time. So I don't think I'll ever return to the primitive cotton buds method ever again.

Just a few important things before I go:
♥ Never use tissue to remove nail polish. Tissue is actually quite coarse and will damage your nails.
♥ My nails used to peel even when I used cotton buds. With this method, my nails don't peel nor dry out anymore after removal.
♥ Always wipe from nail bed to nail tip. Swiping back and forth and/or in the opposite way will make your nails peel.

Now that it only takes 5 minutes for you to take off your nail polish, maybe you'd change your nails more often. Come on, I dare you.
